Welcome aboard and today we have a regular 1st class ticket from Sheffield to London St Pancras
purchased at a price of € 46.24 about two months in advance
The seating configuration in first class is 2 + 1
Each seat in 1st class is equipped with a table, individual power socket, coat rack and window blind
All seats in first class are upholstered in leather
Our journey today is 269 km long and takes just over 2 hours
We're on our way to London
Today we use the service of the British operator East Midlands Railway
EMR is a British train operating company owned by Transport UK Group
and is the current operator of the East Midlands franchise
Originally owned by Abellio, EMR took over operations from East Midlands Trains (EMT) on 18 August 2019
During early 2020, passenger numbers and ticket revenues collapsed following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic
leading to the original franchise agreement being initially suspended before being replaced entirely
Under the new National Rail Contract signed in 2022, the franchise is to last until October 2030
In February 2023, Transport UK Group concluded a management buyout of Abellio's UK business, which included EMR
The railway we are riding today is the Midland Main Line
The Midland Main Line (MML) is a major railway line from London to Sheffield in Yorkshire via the East Midlands
It comprises the lines from London's St Pancras station via Leicester, Derby/Nottingham and Chesterfield
Express passenger services on the line are operated by East Midlands Railway (EMR)
The line is electrified between St Pancras and Corby, and the section south of Bedford
forms a branch of the northern half of the Thameslink network, with a semi-fast service to Brighton
and other suburban services
A northern part of the route, between Derby and Chesterfield, also forms part of the Cross Country Route operated by CrossCountry
Tracks from Nottingham to Leeds via Barnsley and Sheffield are shared with Northern
East Midlands Railway also operates regional and local services using parts of the line
The Midland Main Line is undergoing a major upgrade of new digital signalling and full line electrification from London to Sheffield
High Speed 2 was planned to branch onto the Midland Main Line at East Midlands Parkway railway station
The train we are riding today is a British class 222
British Rail Class 222 Meridian is a diesel-electric multiple-unit high-speed passenger train capable of 125 mph (200 km/h)
The Class 222 is part of the Bombardier Voyager family, so it is very similar to the Class 220 Voyager and
Class 221 Super Voyager trains used by CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast
In comparison, the Class 222s have a different interior and also have more components fitted under the floors to free up space within the body
Built for Midland Mainline and Hull Trains, today all are operated by East Midlands Railway and branded Meridians
All 222 are equipped with a Cummins QSK19 diesel engine of 559 kW (750 hp) at 1,800 rpm
This powers a generator, which supplies current to motors driving two axles per coach
Approximately 1,350 miles (2,170 km) can be travelled between each refuelling
Class 222 have rheostatic braking using the motors in reverse to generate electricity which is dissipated
as heat through resistors situated on the roof of each coach; this saves on brake pad wear
All Class 222 units are maintained at the dedicated Derby Etches Park depot, just south of Derby railway station
This train has 5 cars, with 192 standard seats and 50 first-class seats
We are slowly approaching our today's destination, London St Pancras International
